چکیده

Practical experiments in a satellite network environment assist in the design and understanding of future global networks. This paper describes the practical experiences gained from TCP/IP on ATM networks over a high speed satellite link and presents performance comparison studies of such networks with the same host/traac conngurations over local area (LAN) and wide area (WAN) networks. These comparison studies on the LAN, WAN, and satellite environments increase our understanding of the behavior of high bandwidth networks. NASA's Advanced Communications Technology Satellite (ACTS), with its special characteristics and high data rate satellite channels, and the ACTS ATM Internetwork (AAI) were used in these experiments to deliver broadband traac. Network performance tests were carried out using application-level software (Netspec) on SONET OC-3 (155.52 Mbps) satellite links. Finally, in this paper we study the performance, eeciency, fairness, and aggressiveness of TCP Reno, TCP New Reno, and TCP SACK end hosts on ATM networks over high Bandwidth Delay Product (BDP) networks.

An empirical study of TCP/IP performance over ATM

This paper outlines some basic performance characteristics of the Transmission Control Protocol / Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) over Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM). It also discusses a few solutions to assure acceptable TCP/IP performance over ATM which are implemented by the industry the during the last couple of years. The conclusions in this paper are based on empirical TCP/IP performance tes...

Transport Protocols for Large Bandwidth-Delay Product Networks - TCP Extensions and Alternative Transport Protocols

TCP’s poor performance is identified as the bottleneck of high-speed networks. Extensions to TCP have been proposed and implemented. Some authors abandon TCP at all and suggest new transport protocols to overcome TCP limitations, at the expense of compatibility. This paper reports a research on the most significant TCP extensions and transport alternatives, and comparison between them. The majo...

Satellite Transport Protocol (STP): An SSCOP-based Transport Protocol for Datagram Satellite Networks

We describe the adaptation of an ATM-based protocol, the Service Specific Connection Oriented Protocol (SSCOP), for use as a transport protocol in a datagram-based satellite data network. This protocol operates with high throughput and efficiency over links with a large bandwidth-delay product, including those with a high bit error or packet loss rate. We discuss the modifications to SSCOP nece...

Status of this Memo This memo discusses two extensions to the TCP protocol to provide a more efficient operation over a network with a high bandwidth*delay product. The extensions described in this document have been implemented and shown to work using resources at NASA. This memo describes an Experimental Protocol, these extensions are not proposed as an Internet standard, but as a starting po...

Broadband Satellite Network: TCP/IP Performance Analysis

A number of satellite communication systems have been proposed using geosynchronous (GEO) satellites, as well as low earth orbit (LEO) constellations operating in the Ka-band and above. At these frequencies satellite networks are able to provide broadband services requiring wider bandwidth than the current services at C or Ku-band. As a consequence, some of the new services gaining momentum inc...
